Will energy costs kill the next generation of supercomputers?
Presentation Information
When: November 18, 2008, 3:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Data centers are the aluminum smelters of the 21st Century. Their energy demands are huge! A new exascale computer can use as much energy as 20,000 homes. As the cost of goes up, companies search for ways to lower their energy bills. Yet, there are few standards for measuring and evaluating HPC energy use. Dr. Steve Elbert of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's Energy Smart Data Center will discuss new technologies for capturing energy use data and gathering metrics on new cooling technologies.
